I know, I know. How many times am I going to talk about Yorktown? The thing is, I grew up close to Lake Tahoe. Many school days were ditched to go up to Tahoe and a lot of drives to clear my mind were taken around the lake. It is one of my favorite places ever.
Yorktown is becoming one of those places for me. It is peaceful and beautiful and quaint and I love it.
We only had one day to explore after the storm before my mom left and limited time before Fisher would get home from school so we decided to Yorktown instead of Williamsburg.
I like this picture since it shows how big the Victory Monument really is.
We could not have chosen a more beautiful day to be there.
We took the boys down in the sand to run around. My boys love it here. Cooper asks me every day if he can go run on the beach.
Pretty much the same picture, only closer. This post is one of those "I can't choose between so I will put up both" kind of posts.)
Love my mom!
Cooper just runs around like a crazy person every which direction.
It was fun to see the schooners preparing to sail. One day, we plan on taking the boys on a ride.
Lovely, isn't it?
I had not read this sign before but I thought it appropriate since we had just experienced a nor'easter and hurricane the four days prior to this. I did not know a similar storm played such an important roll in us obtaining our freedom from England.
This picture makes me think of a "Where's Waldo" book except it is "Where's Cooper?"
Tucker had fun playing in the sand.
I think I am so drawn to the water and boats because it is in my blood. It must be from my mom's side of the family. :)
It was actually kind of chilly so I had to keep telling the boys to stay away from the water. It would have been really cold if they were wet. The stripes were unintentional. :)
My sweet Tucker baby.
He is 20 months old tomorrow. When Cooper was this age, I was two weeks away from having Tucker. I cannot even fathom having another baby right now with Tucker being this age. Then there are Cooper and Fisher to contend with too....Yeah. Not going to happen. At least not any time soon.
We watched all the sails go up.
One day my personal library is going to be a nautical theme. You know, one day when we actually live some place long enough to settle in for longer than a few years at a time. It will give me time to continue building up my book collection. :)
Cooper stopped running for a while to do some Navy Seal training.
He really was crawling across the sand like this.
Here is a view of Main Street. It is so cute and clean!
My mom loved this. It is right across the street from the beach.
Cooper stopped playing in the sand to tell me he had to go potty. (Potty training a total success with Cooper! Night and day from Fisher. Now I know why most people aren't as traumatized as I was after the first experience. It was 99% harder and not a normal case AT ALL. Cooper has made it so that I feel like I will be able to take on Tucker sooner rather than later.)
Anywhoo, the nearest restroom was across the street at Ben & Jerry's.
Oh shucks.
:)
What a perfect location for an ice cream shop.
After that, we found a nice place to eat our ice cream and watch the boat sail away.
One mission ice cream was complete we hopped back in the car to drive around the old houses. This is up the hill from the beach.
My Mom's favorite.
She wants to stay here with my Dad one time when they come visit.
Cute little restaurant where I would like to eat. My favorite building. :)
Grace Episcopal Church originally built in 1697. It has quite an interesting history that can be read about here.
Days like this in a location such as this make me wish I lived back in time. But then I remember how much I love my AC and dishwasher and hot showers and I am content just reading about the olden days. :)
The cemeteries around here are dated as far back as the 1600's.
Last, I took my mom to go see some of the battlefields.
There is a certain reverence that I feel when I am here. I can't help but think about all the young (and old) soldiers and what they must have seen and experienced.
Across from some of the fields is a Civil war cemetery for 2,183 Union soldiers. 2/3 of the bodies are unidentified.
I am so grateful to all of those who have fought for our country, past and present. I am thankful to live in this country even if I hate what politics have become.
Truthfully, even though I am still sad about not being able to go to Japan, I am so glad we have had the opportunity to live here and learn more about the history of this nation.
We could be in a much less desirable location. :)
